It’s been a little quiet here for the past 2 weeks don’t you think? February is upon us and the unit 9 target date has just passed (there are 18 units in total for each of my courses), signaling the second half of the school year. So as of late, I’ve been frantically rushing around to finish SOMETHING. Yes, something, because it feels like NOTHING is getting done around here. I know I’m going to kick myself in the face when I end up in summer school—YET AGAIN! Why didn’t I just go to a normal high school? OH, BECAUSE I’M AN IDIOT. frustrate

Oh and because I can’t leave my friends. Did I mention that I have a friend who just made it into the Trinidad & Tobago FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup national team? Meaning she’s going to play for Trinidad & Tobago in September. For FIFA. On TV. I HAVE THE COOLEST FRIENDS EVER!!

Wait—what was I talking about again? Right, school. On Friday, our school semi-formal happened. The theme was “Bright Lights, Big City” so each table represented a city (ours was Madrid). As you would expect in a high school dance, most of the girls wore dresses with butt-cheek–skimming hemlines and high high heels that pierced everyone else’s feet. Some boys had badly-fitted suits and many looked like they were trying too hard. The food was just meh and the DJ played too much reggae. The dancing comprised of the usual grinding, sweating, jumping, screaming, boy-on-girl humping, and even girl-on-girl humping. dead (I bet they regretted that in the morning!)

Sounds like I’m just ranting about what I bad night I had, but I honestly had fun! Even though the concept of personal space was practically non-existent, everyone smelled, and although it was almost 20 degrees below zero outside, it was still nice seeing all my friends in their fancy dresses and, well, dancing!

Don’t think I’ll shell out $40 next year though… gotta save up for prom!

Before I end it off, there’s another thing I wanted to cover in this post—the new Feb. 2010 J.Crew Catalog! It sucks that there are no stores here in Canada, but that doesn’t stop me from drooling over these beauties:

I always enjoy class trips to downtown Toronto! I don’t really get a chance to explore its little nooks and crannies often—especially now during winter—so I enjoyed yesterday’s outing a lot! Another thing is that it’s usually the fun art teachers that take us to city trips. happy

Our first stop was the Toronto Star headquarters. Admittedly, I thought going there would be suuuper boring—I mean really, weren’t we just going to talk to some newspaper writers? WRONG.
I actually left feeling inspired and motivated (definitely not something you would expect to feel when leaving a dull gray building clouds) because of all the cool people we spoke to, such as: Steve Russell, the head photographer who told us about his experiences while shooting in places abroad, in dangerous war zones, the Beijing Olympics, etc; a new designer who talked to us mostly about university prep. and even gave us her card smile; and a lady whose job it is to edit photos for print and who gave us some nice Photoshop tips. sparkle

Next up, we went to a place called Richtree Market Restaurants which reminded me a bit of Frankie Tomatto’s because of the little “town” inside of the restaurant. We even got water from a fountain in the “town square”. content

I just dumped a bunch of stuff on my plate pictured above and discovered that I really hate black olives… blech!

After filling our stomachs with some good food, my teacher gave us the option of just going home or tagging along with her to a gallery where her artwork was being shown. excaim Of course I chose the latter.

Ever since my parents bought The Beatles: Rock Band game a few months back, I’ve really been indulging myself in The Beatles’ music, movies, etc. hubbahubba Not only have they been dominating my whole iTunes library, but I noticed that they are even seeping into my schoolwork.
Examples: For one of my English assignments, we were asked to do a biography of any famous person we wanted, and I ended up doing it on John Lennon. For Journalism class, we have to start a kind of journalism blog and I decided to name mine, “Here Comes the Sun”. I incorporated their A Hard Day’s Night LP cover into a Photoshop collage I had to make in the beginning of the year.

I guess you could say this is my way of sharing my current obsession with the world. embarassed

Where am I going with this? Well, today my Media Arts/Communications Technology teacher introduced us to a new strand in our course: Typography excaim Our task is to first pick a song we like and then choose a nice font that connects to our song of choice. Next, we have to use only the lyrics of that song to create a piece of typographic artwork in Adobe InDesign.

My plan is to choose a song by The Beatles. I haven’t decided on which one, but I’m leaning towards their long medley called Golden Slumbers, Carry that Weight, and The End so that I can include the really great line at the end of The End:

“And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.”

Some examples of what I mean by “typographic” artwork:
